Interim Manager of the Year Awards 2013

Last night, acclaimed Interim Executives and high profile Business Leaders descended upon Lainston House Hotel in Winchester to toast the Wessex100 Interim Managers of the Year (sponsored by Intramezzo and RSM Tenon).

The awards sought to celebrate the significant contribution made by interims and here we recognise the award winners and runners-up and take a look at their winning projects.

Interim Manager of the Year – Best of the Best Award

Neil Birkbeck

When Tunstall decided that it was time to review all aspects of its vehicle fleet management, it choose Neil to support them. He worked with the internal teams and the incumbent supplier to understand the vehicle requirements and undertook the leg work that supported key decisions. Neil’s analysis provided further clarity around many of the chargeable elements.

Jason Cicero of Tunstall: “Through Neil’s work we moved away from our existing supplier, taking the key decision to separate maintenance and repair from vehicle provision, this was based upon the clear cost saving opportunities demonstrated through Neil’s analysis”. Savings were in excess of 11%.

National Winner – Interim Manager of the Year

Intense competition from brands such as Apple and Samsung had been eroding SONY Europe’s margins. Yet only a handful of the business’ European operating centres had an existing procurement capability and those which did, operated independently and were unable to deliver savings on anything but a fragmented proportion of SONY’s € 1 billion pan-European spend. Given ownership for establishing the common foundations for the pan-European procurement Practice; its policies, systems, procedures, reporting and communications with the objective of driving up the proportion of the € 1 billion spend which could be leveraged through pan-European contracts.

National Runners Up – Interim Manager of the Year

Martin Donnachie

Martin was Interim Managing Director of NIFES between January and June 2012. NIFES is a private equity owned energy and building services consultancy business. Martin was brought in to improve the financial performance of the business and, in particular, to rapidly increase the level of sales. Achievements included:

– Sales increased by 75% compared to the previous run rate.

– A challenging year-end profit target was met.

– Net WIP and outstanding debt both reduced by 30%.

– Safety, quality and business control process improvements were made.

– Morale improved and staff retention increased.

The client was delighted with the results of this assignment.

Alison Spackman

The Metropolitan Police Service outsources its Facilities Management Services at a cost of £85m per annum. Alison led a change programme to develop and procure a ground-breaking FM outsourcing model to contribute to the Met-wide budget deficit of £500m by 2015. Alison worked with key stakeholders to identify and deliver £50m of savings through the current contracts to April 2014. Alison managed the development of a new Integrated Facilities Management Model, delivering the new contract against an ambitious EU procurement timetable in March 2013. The new model is expected to deliver additional savings of £8m per annum.

Regional Runners Up – Interim Manager of the Year

Harry Cruickshank

The client, a $1.6B global corporation, was impacted by a declining market and sought to optimise an immature European online channel for customer engagement, sales growth and service delivery, as part of a multi-£M transformational change initiative. Harry’s contribution was to lead development of their online strategy and support a number of core initiatives to kick-start the implementation process. He also provided coaching to the European central and country-based marketing teams. The success of the project helped to underpin a strategic £85m revenue stream. It provided a clear go-to-market model and management and staff were fully engaged.

Ian Bonny

The London 2012 Olympic Park development sits across adjoining boundaries of four Local Authorities; Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. The Joint Local Authority Regulatory Services team (JLARS) was conceived to jointly deliver eleven regulatory services, enabling the successful delivery of all London 2012 venues.

As JLARS Programme Manager, Ian’s role was to:

– Secure £5m of programme funding;

– Negotiate a legal agreement at Cabinet-level between the four Boroughs;

– Develop JLARS strategy, budget and SLA;

– Establish an operating JLARS unit!

With the granting of a single event licence, JLARS could be said to have ultimately delivered the London 2012 Games!
