On Tuesday 22nd May Intramezzo hosted a gathering of some of the most influential business leaders involved in Spin-out, monetising IP and Investment. 94 people registered to attend and Dermot Hill gave a short address for Intramezzo. Hill suggested that IP was the hidden treasure chest of UK plc with only 10% of patents in the UK being actually commercialised. Companies both large and small are capitalising on monetising IP assets more than ever, with HP declaring that it has seen a 4 fold increase in licensing revenues, yielding $200m in revenues (2002 - 2004). Corporates typically spend $1m in research and development for every two patents filed. The sector is very fragmented with many different models in place to realise returns on investment. The UK education sector is building a significant track record in this venturing sector and is regarded as the most advanced and successful in Europe. Many corporates are turning to the Universities to capitalise on this source of R&D effort. Hill went on to explain that the most successful organisation returning typically 20x or more return on their investments was a corporate venturing group operating as a separate, but directly related, part of the parent organisation. During his talk he gave some details of a snapshot survey, inspired by partners Grant Thornton into this important area. One of the areas in which Intramezzo specialises is deploying senior executives to deliver successful spin-outs and developing early stage ventures in preparation for funding. 35% of companies cited that senior executive talent was the single most important factor for capitalising on non-core IP. The next most important factor, some way behind, was Business Planning at 18%. For a list of companies registered for the event of a copy of the survey results please see files attached.
